Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
