TikTok Provides Users Authority to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a new feature that enables them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 thousand million AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This shift aligns with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by recent content generation software.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that approximately 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this material is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for inferior, factory-style content that is typically nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users enjoy content created using AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we intend to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” stated a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

The platform shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as made with AI. Overall, in excess of 100 million pieces of content are added to the app every day, making clips made by AI a minor percentage of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be in a position to reduce or increase the level of artificial media they see by using the topic control setting in the application and selecting the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the setting cover news, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s rules oblige content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous AI impersonations of celebrities or critical incidents. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be taken down under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the platform will now add an “AI-made” label to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying artificial media. This measure is aimed to stop users from trying to bypass the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is furthermore introducing a $2m AI literacy fund for experts and organizations to develop informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to educating programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has justified its safety measures, following controversy over intentions to make redundant hundreds of review team members in Britain. The company is expected to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation team in its British office, with trade unions and internet security professionals raising concerns that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most harmful content before it gets reviewed by staff. The platform announced a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content seen by content reviewers over the previous year due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
