Prime Television Selections: Seven Can't-Miss Movies This Coming Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's bold critique addresses the oppressive nature of women's appearance and the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore presents an inspired performance as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star reduced to starring in a fitness program on TV. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying treatment called "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a steadily more toxic connection among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful thriller stars Keira Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who opts for a hiatus from reporting on global conflict to join a high-end voyage with an ailing wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her husband, and other filthy rich guests. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and all passengers denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills through this clever supernatural story captured wholly from the perspective of the spirit. When a household featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the lens – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage embraces his unique fame via this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a birthday party in Mallorca for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the CIA to spy on the potential kingpin, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well without requiring a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has rendered the children on edge. After Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. But the disconnected phone in the room keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the battle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for greed in this director's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, though Chastain manages to depict the character as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This period's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a espionage tale as sharp like the turtlenecks sported by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to discover a traitor within their ranks out of five possibilities – including is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mind game of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
