Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
