No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
