The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
